Abstract

All Quiet on the Far Eastern Front? Transnational Perspective of history on the nationalistic Eastern Asia

Abstract

In the last years, we have repeatedly seen conflicts between China, Japan and South Korea caused by different perceptions of history. However, there are also some transnational projects aiming at overwhelming these conflicts through joint research or shared writing of history textbooks. The article briefly reports on some of these projects, including the bi-national historical committees of Japan and Korea and of China and Japan, respectively; the tri-national history textbook project; and, the ‘realms of memory in Eastern Asia’. For their part, the European experiments such as the French-German history textbook have certainly given inspirations for these East-Asian projects. The purpose of the latter is to confront the specific historical and actual situation of Eastern Asia, as reflected in the constellation of these transnational schemes.
