Abstract

Abstract

The very first large-scale research on sexuality in Italy was held in the late 70s, and the first national survey was conducted only in 2006. The aim of this paper is to offer a selected – surely nonexhaustive – review of the Italian social researches on sexuality. By discussing the evolutions of the last forty years, the paper wants to analyse the struggles that Italian sexuality research has to face with traditional conventions and gender inequalities issues which are still preventing the construction of an autonomous field of study. Throughout such a review we will show some historical deficits in order to analyse the epistemological reasons that limited the spread of this research field especially in Italian academic milieu. In the final part of the paper we will try to draw a first overview of some urgent future evolutions.
