So Many Matches, so Little Time. The Consequences of Social Acceleration for Romantic Relationships

Abstract

Social acceleration as a key feature of modernity deeply entrenches all aspects of human interaction. This process has consequences for romantic relationships, for example through messenger services and dating applications brought by technological innovation. These technologies provide new ways of forming and managing romantic relationships but also rationalize their experience. Romance translates into social units of action that need to be organized in the daily routine of busy individuals. These individuals now are faced with an overabundance of possible lovers coupled with a struggle to maintain romance’s adventurousness and intensity.
