Zusammenfassung

Im Feld kritischer Gesellschaftstheorien sind Marxismus und Postcolonial Studies zwei Geschwister, zwischen denen es oft Familienkrach gibt. Beide treten mit grundsätzlich herrschaftskritischen Ansprüchen an, werfen der jeweils anderen Seite aber regelmäßig vor, diese nicht einzulösen, wenn es darum geht, die kapitalistische Produktionsweise global zu denken. Dieser Beitrag fokussiert auf die postkoloniale Kritik an der Art und Weise, wie Marx und der Marxismus historische Entwicklung denken und wie der Marxismus auf diese Kritik reagiert hat. Anschließend diskutiert er jene Elemente aus Marx‘ Werk, die im Zentrum der postkolonialen Kritik stehen, da sie ein Verständnis des globalen Kapitalismus blockieren. Ferner geht es darum, bestimmte Teile von Marx‘ Werk als ein sozialwissenschaftliches Projekt zu rekonstruieren, das es erlaubt, die genannten Probleme zu überwinden. Abschließend werden anhand der Begriffe von Racial Capitalism und Überausbeutung einige Überlegungen angestellt, wie sich eine Analyse globaler Ungleichheiten bzw. von Rassismus entwickeln lässt, die sich am Marx‘schen Werk orientiert ist, ohne dessen Eurozentrismus zu reproduzieren.

Marxism facing the postcolonial challenge – Historical Materialism and Racial Capitalism

Abstract

In the field of critical social theory, Marxism and postcolonial studies are two siblings who often clash. Both claim to be fundamentally critical of relations of domination, but regularly accuse the other side of failing to honour these claims when it comes to theorizing the capitalist mode of production globally. This article focuses on the postcolonial critique of the way in which Marx and Marxism think historical development and how Marxism has reacted to this critique. It then discusses those elements of Marx’s work that are at the centre of the postcolonial critique as they prevent an understanding of global capitalism. Furthermore, certain parts of Marx’s work will be reconstructed as a social science project enabling to overcome the aforementioned problems. Finally, using the concepts of racial capitalism and over-exploitation, I refl ect on how to develop an analysis of global inequalities and racism that is orientated towards Marx’s work without reproducing its Eurocentrism.
