Performativität als Grundlage politischer Handlung. Ein kultursoziologischer Einwurf zur Debatte um politische Kultur

Hauptargument dieses Artikels ist es, dass die klassische Verwendungsweise des Begriffs der politischen Kultur zu kurz greift und um eine Perspektive erweitert werden muss, in der Kultur der Rahmen für soziales und politisches Handeln ist. Der Performance-Begriff Jeffrey Alexanders bietet hier eine Lösung an, die einen klaren Mechanismus benennt, durch den Kultur in Handlung umgesetzt und beobachtet wird. Allerdings muss auch der Performance-Begriff um eine prozessual-relationale Perspektive erweitert werden, denn Handlung sozialer AkteurInnen setzt sich immer auch in Beziehung zu anderen Handlungen und zu anderen AkteurInnen. Die prozessuale Perspektive, so das methodische Argument, ermöglicht es, Handlungen als Bestandteile von Performanceketten zu verstehen, die von den AkteurInnen selbst und ihrem Publikum narrativ wiedergegeben und zu erneuten Performances verarbeitet werden. Die Narrative eines politischen Prozesses, die Entwicklungen ermöglichen und Alternativen beschränken, bilden dann das Primärmaterial für die Analyse von politischem Handeln und somit der politischen Kultur.

Abstract

This article claims that the classic use of the concept of political culture ignores the embeddedness of social action into culture. Jeffrey Alexander’s concept of social performance offers a solution to this by indicating a clear mechanism for the translation and the observation of culture in action. Still, the concept of performance has to be extended by a process and relational approach, since action is always related to other actions and actors. This approach allows for observing actions as parts of chains of performances, which in turn are processed narratively by the audience and the actor itself, and which lay the ground for new performances. The narratives of political processes, which enable developments and constrain alternatives, are the primary source for the analysis of political action, and hence of political culture.
