Abstract
Increasingly, oral history interviews are being digitally archived and made available as research data for future reuse. For this, the FAIR principles state as criteria that the interviews should be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable for other researchers. While this primarily fosters a secondary analysis, ethical issues and power dynamics are now being discussed in connection with the CARE principles. This acronym developed for indigenous research data stands for Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility and Ethics. The article introduces both concepts and discusses their applicability to German-language oral history, specifically the archiving and hosting of interview collections. Thereby, the still less-known CARE principles take up more space. The FAIR principles offer good guidance for curating, presenting and archiving interview collections. Even if the capacity to implement them is still lacking in many cases, there are now supporting infrastructures and tools. However, there are ethical issues to consider, which are not new to oral history, but need to be addressed differently in the digital age. The CARE principles provide a helpful impetus for this debate, even if they are only partly transferable and difficult to implement. Overall, FAIR and CARE principles can help to ensure the sustainable reusability of interviews while being aware of the relevance of power relations and communities.
