Abstract
Analyzing Interaction with Structural Sensitivity: Connections to Adele Clarke’s Situational Analysis
This article aims to establish a link between Adele Clarke's situational analysis and interpretative research in concrete spatial face-to-face situations. It is assumed that the situational analysis, in favor of a focus on collective action, underestimates the importance of face-to-face interactions for the analysis of social structure. Drawing on empirical studies in subjectivation and the so-called Vienna School of interpretive social research with its focus on structural conditions and systemic effects, this article aims to close this conceptual gap in situational analysis and establish links to recent German-language debates. I propose to speak of structure-sensitive interaction research. The article discusses the potentials of such an approach for situational analysis. The concept of situation by Thomas/Thomas (1970 [1928]), with the focus on the factual elements of a situation, serves as a link between the two traditions. This approach can be used to highlight both the affinities and complementarities of the different perspectives.
