Abstract
Referring to the Future. The Biographical Relevance of the Future, Illustrated by the Example of a former Jihadist
Future projections take on particular significance during periods of crisis and social change. Actors use practices of planning, wishing and hoping to refer to the future and mold their lives in uncertain situations. Against the backdrop of social phenomenological and pragmatist concepts, this contribution examines the relevance of these future references for biographical action, experiences and narratives. Using a case study from a study on militant Salafism and discussing theoretical concepts of biographical research, it develops the methodological and theoretical outlines of a concept of “future references” which allows for reconstructive research on the biographical significance of the future.
