» General Information and Scope
The aim and purpose of IJREE – International Journal for Research on Extended Education is to create international visibility and a stronger scientific profile for research in the field of extended education. To ensure a high scientific standard it is subject to a rigorous peer review process and targets primarily the scientific community in this field. Theoretical papers, basic empirical research and applied research aimed at addressing practical and policy issues from researchers from the widest range of disciplines including psychology, education, sociology, political science and education economics are welcome.
IJREE – International Journal for Research on Extended Education has three parts:
1.) A main section comprising four papers (peer reviewed!) dedicated to a specific main topic. This main topic is defined by a (guest)editor or (guest)editors. The person(s) that is responsible for the main topic invites four submissions and writes a paper (non-peer reviewed) that frames and sums up the four papers within the main topic. If you would like to propose a main topic, please contact the Journal Manager.
2.) A section consisting of papers (peer reviewed!) on freely chosen topics in the area of extended education. Single submissions will be published in this section for general contributions. If you would like to submit a paper, please contact the Journal Manager.
3.) A non-peer reviewed section. This section on the one hand publishes non-peer reviewed papers on “Developments in the Field of Extended Education” (e.g. conference proceedings, reports on relevant networks, elaborated methods, new studies, etc.). On the other hand book reviews are published within this section. If you would like to contribute to the developments- or the reviews-section, please contact the Journal Manager before preparing your manuscript.
» The Peer-Reviewed Sections of IJREE
In both peer-reviewed sections IJREE publishes only original papers. For IJREE an original paper is a presentation of new scientific findings or insights, which have not been previously published to any substantial extent in print or internet publications. By submitting a manuscript, the author declares that his or her contribution in no way has been or will be published in another journal.
IJREE strives for clear and concise language and asks authors to pay attention to the quality of the language of their articles.
» Peer Review Procedure
At least two reviewers in a blind review process will read each manuscript that is handed in. Therefore the name and further contact details of the author/s should be printed only on a separate cover sheet or the cover letter. Obvious self-citations or comments should be avoided in this phase of the review process in order to protect the anonymity of the author. The editors can only guarantee blind review if authors follow these recommendations.
Since the reviewers work on a voluntary basis, the editors and publisher reserve the right to lengthen the review period. Unsolicited manuscripts cannot be returned to the authors.
Four different votes are possible:
1. Rejection of the manuscript
2. Acceptance with request for major revision
3. Acceptance with requests for changes
4. Acceptance without requests for changes
Manuscripts are accepted for publication if both reviewers give a positive vote. If only one of the reviewers votes for acceptance of the manuscript, a third reviewer is consulted. If any doubt still remains, the editor decides after consulting the reviewer who recommended rejection on how to proceed.
In the case of (2) or (3) the authors will be provided with the reviewers’ anonymous comments including their recommendations for changes. In the case of (2) the paper undergoes an additional review process, while in the case of (3) the managing editor decides.
If your submission is accepted after the review process, we would like to ask you to make all necessary changes and corrections before you hand in your final version for printing, as we cannot make more than small changes once the articles have been set.
» Author Guidelines

Submission of Manuscripts:
Manuscripts should not exceed 40,000 characters including spaces, footnotes and sources but excluding tables and charts. The editors reserve the right when accepting manuscripts to request that they be shortened.
Manuscripts should be submitted to the Journal Manager via e-mail. Submission of a hardcopy is unnecessary. Manuscripts should be sent as a .docx file. The manuscript must be formatted with 1.15-line spacing, Times New Roman font, 12-point type and margins of 3 cm on each side. The manuscript must have the following structure:
Page 1: Information concerning the contribution
- English title (and, if applicable, subtitle). The title (and, if applicable, the subtitle) should be short and concise.
- English abstract. A concise and factual abstract is required. The abstract should be written in the present tense and be no longer than 200 words maximum.
- English keywords (maximum of 6)
Page 2: Start of contribution. For empirical contributions the following structure according to international standards is recommended:
- Introduction and research questions
- Review of the literature
- Hypotheses
- Methods
- Results
- Discussion
Information at the end of the article must have the following structure:
- Endnotes (please use Arabic numerals)
- References (for more information see below ‘citations and references’)
On the last page please provide information on all authors as follows:

Citations and References:
Please use the APA-style of citation in the 6th edition. See the text example below.
The use of citations from webpages such as Wikipedia with constantly changing content and no identifiable authors is not permitted. If previously written articles or parts/citations from them are used, they must be paraphrased and indicated in accordance with the guidelines of this journal.
Before submitting the manuscript please check if the literature cited in the text matches the references in the references.

Please use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association in the 6th edition (APA, 2010). The following examples are created using the instructions in the Manual. Please also check the APA website: www.apastyle.org.
This is how to cite a journal paper with one author (One, Year), two authors (One & Two, Year) or three authors (One, Two, & Three, Year). If you cite them all in one it looks like this (One, Year; One & Two, Year; One, Two, & Three, Year). The APA style has a restriction concerning very many authors at once, like e.g. seven (One, Two, Three et al., Year). The “&” is only used in brackets. If you cite like this “One and Two (Year) found out…” please use the “and”. The same for three authors: “One, Two, and Three (Year) propose…”. Please cite a book like this (APA, 2010) and a chapter within an edited volume like this (Four & Five, year).

Ethical Guidelines for Authors:
By submitting their manuscript to IJREE authors guarantee that:
1) the submitted article is their own original work,
2) the submitted article has not been published in another publication (print or online) and is not being reviewed elsewhere for publication (print or online) at the moment of submission,
3) the submission does not contain any offensive, defamatory or unlawful statements,
4) consent for any third-party material used in the submission has been obtained,
5) all research results and statements by third parties (as well as previous publications by the authors) are indicated by appropriate quotation notations,
6) consent has been obtained from any individuals and/or organizations named in the submission,
7) in the course of their research for the submitted article, authors have acted in compliance with international and national standards of data protection, personality rights and the right to privacy,
8) authorship has been agreed prior to submission, i.e. no other person without substantial contribution to the submitted article is named as an author. Any person who has actively and substantially contributed to the submitted article is listed as an author.
Authors submitting a contribution to IJREE agree to these ethical guidelines and are aware that disregard of these guidelines will result in the submission not being published in IJREE.
The editors of IJREE and Verlag Barbara Budrich consent to deal with any conflict between authors and the editors/publisher that might arise from ignoring the aforementioned ethical guidelines in a professional, fair, objective and constructive manner.
