A Roadmap towards a "Union of Equality": Challenges and Impulses for Gender Equality in the European Union
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article outlines the key principles, topics, and demands of future EU gender equality policy. It focuses on follow-up strategies for the EU Gender Equality Strategy (2020-2025) and the EU LGBTIQ Equality Strategy (2020-2025), both of which aim to help realise the vision of a 'Union of Equality'. The article outlines the basis on which EU gender equality policy can build, identifying challenges for policymakers in the process. Based on this analysis, the article proposes policy recommendations for the coming years while reflecting on their feasibility. The article argues that an intersectional approach to gender equality is central to social progress in the EU, as well as to democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Against this backdrop, civil society organisations in particular must be given substantial, long-term support.
