Abstract

Contemporary Violent Phenomena and Hybridization at the Nexus of (Right-Wing) Extremism, Sexualized Violence, and Nihilism: 764 and the Com – An Approximation
This article examines emerging international developments within digital violent milieus, focusing on so-called nihilistic online networks such as “764” and related communities. Drawing on illustrative cases, including the German “White Tiger,” it explores how seemingly innocuous interactions in chat platforms, gaming environments, and online support spaces can evolve into escalating cycles of manipulation, coercion, extortion, and offline harm. A defining characteristic of these milieus is their fluid and often fragmented  ideological orientation. Rather than adhering to coherent extremist doctrines, extremist references frequently serve as symbolic or aesthetic resources that can be appropriated alongside other forms of transgressive and violent content. This points to the emergence of hybrid ecosystems where nihilism, extremist narratives, and sexualized violence increasingly intersect. The article situates these developments within contemporary international and German debates, highlighting key trends and their growing relevance for security policy and prevention efforts. Particular attention is paid to Canada’s 2025 designation of several associated networks as terrorist entities, a development that underscores growing concerns about the threat posed by these online environments. While empirical research on “764” and related networks remains limited, available case studies suggest several emerging patterns, including the convergence of extremist and sexualized forms of violence, the role of online radicalization processes and psychosocial vulnerability, and the increasing involvement of youth. At the same time, publicly available evidence remains fragmented, particularly with respect to offender profiles, recruitment dynamics, and pathways into these groups, especially in the German context. Rather than offering definitive conclusions, this article is intended as a starting point for further discussion. It identifies key questions for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, particularly regarding the adaptation of existing preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE) frameworks to address these novel and highly hybridized phenomena. Ultimately, it seeks to illuminate the scope, dynamics, and analytical challenges posed by these evolving forms of online violence and to stimulate debate on future research and policy solutions.
