The international journal publishes contributions to the scientific debate in the social sciences.

It draws its profile from two thematic lines. On the one hand, it aims to go beyond the narrow disciplinary boundaries of sociology, in particular promoting exchange with related disciplines such as communication studies, philosophy, political science, ethnology and law. On the other hand, it opens up references to the discourses of sociology in its formation period for its range of topics.

In the first three years, the publication of the journal was made financially possible by the Hamburger Stiftung zur Förderung von Wissenschaft und Kultur. From 2026, the journal will be funded by the Foundation Science and Democracy based in Kiel.
