Abstract
Shame – Guilt – Silence? The subjectification of unintended pregnant people
Shame and guilt are emotions that unintended pregnant people are often confronted with. These feelings are related to social control and uphold compliance with norms. As abortions are usually perceived as a norm violation, they often, but not necessarily, lead to those affected remaining silent. This article illustrates the connection between the aforementioned emotions, social discourses and subject positions and the resulting positioning. To that end, narrative/biographical interviews are examined using a reflexive thematic analysis from the perspective of the sociology of emotions. The analysis synthesizes three types of feelings of shame and guilt that arise when contraception fails, the decision is taken to have an abortion and because of patriarchal expectations. It becomes clear that shame and guilt do not have to lead to silence. The prerequisite, however, is a comprehensive capacity to act, which is not granted to all interviewees.
