The Motif “Heart” as an EmotionalizedMobilization Strategy: Parental Engagement for Refugees from Ukraine in Schools in Poland
Due to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine in 2022, millions of Ukrainians fled to various countries, many of them to Poland. In the context of refugee aid in Poland, one can speak of a simultaneity of different practices. Racist practices, selective solidarity, and anti-Ukrainian rhetoric occur simultaneously with voluntary commitment to refugees. In addition to private individuals, companies, and other groups, parents also participated in the various aid initiatives at their children’s schools. The topic of RefugeeMigration is associated with emotions such as belonging, fear, hope, joy, anger, compassion, and even hatred. Starting from the conceptualization of emotions as performative action, the question is addressed: How do parents emotionalize their commitment to refugees from Ukraine in Polish schools when they refer to the term “heart”? The aim is to explore the value of emotion-theoretical perspectives for empirical RefugeeMigration research. The article is based on data from a teaching research project.
