Immigrants from the People’s Republic of Poland

This article deals with a dissertation that was awarded the Academic Award of the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland in Germany in 2013. The thesis focuses on a local study of the Saxon town of Riesa, where a group of Poles settled down after emigrating to East Germany between the mid-1960s and the late 1980s. On this basis, the author of the dissertation examines various stages of migration, along with the barriers faced by emigrants and the emigrants’ motivations. The author has come to several conclusions: the Soviet Union did not intervene in this migration process; differing economic interests produced mistrust between Poland and East Germany; the processes by which immigrants were recognized were similar to those at work in West Germany; and the Stasi did not appear to be particularly interested in the new citizens.
