Abstract

Polyphony and dissonance of mothering. A plea for new materialist-informed research into motherhood
This article deals with a topic that is unpopular in many feminist discourses and argues in favour of focussing more on the diversity and relationality of motherhood. I argue that feminist, intersectional and new materialist research on motherhood can highlight the polyphony, multiple voices and dissonance that constitute motherhood and that reflect far more heterogeneous lived realities than perceptions of the ideal suggest. The article, which is literature- and theory-based, shows that it is precisely these approaches that broaden and diversify perspectives on and analyses of motherhood and help to confound hegemonic images of a mother. However, it also becomes clear that feminist new materialist methodologies are worthy of discussion and that the objections raised by Black Studies are highly relevant.
